We are a R.E.A.L. Catholic community that nurtures the whole child through academic excellence, 21st Century innovation and active Catholic stewardship.
Dear Parents,
This year brings your child many opportunities to grow and learn. They are being challenged to be more responsible and to have high expectations of themselves. As their teacher I want them to understand that sometimes reaching goals can be scary and sometimes frustrating. It takes a very long time to become an expert at something that you aren’t so good at yet. In fact, scientists have proven that the only way to learn and get smarter is to attempt something new and work really, really hard at it…. even if you make a lot of mistakes. YES! I I SAID IT! I WANT THEM TO MAKE A LOT OF MISTAKES!!! Here are some language frames that we will be using in the classroom, which can be reinforced at home.

(This challenge is optional) The Challenge: Read for 30 minutes every day for the rest of the school year! Rewards: For every three books you read you will receive a prize. Steps:
Rules: All books must be chapter books, no graphic novels or comic books. You must complete a different graphic organizer for each book. The graphic organizer must be completely filled out in complete sentences where appropriate. Novel studies read in class do not count. Prizes: 3 Books=Treasure Box 6 Books= IOU-Extra time on homework or Extra Recess 12 Books= Lunch with the teacher This is the year that students move from learning to read — decoding words using their knowledge of the alphabet — to reading to learn. The books children are expected to master are no longer simple primers but fact-filled text. Comprehension skills will include citing evidence and identifying key ideas and details. Children who haven’t made the leap to fast, fluent reading begin at this moment to fall behind, and for most of them the gap will continue to grow. Reading at home nightly is an important habit to form. Please encourage your child to read 30 minutes every night.
The expectation in 3rd grade is that students answer questions in complete sentences across the curriculum. This will help them become stronger writers and better communicators. You can reinforce this at home by reviewing homework and assignments with your child to make sure that their answers are in a complete sentence that does not start with and or because. Example: What is your favorite food? My favorite food is peanut butter. Please practice multiplication facts from 0-11 with your child. You can do this with flashcards, simple card games, apps, or games. Feel free to mix it up and make it fun. Dear 3rdGrade Parents, Happy Summer! I hope that everyone has a fun and relaxing summer! Thank you for sharing your children with me. I feel so blessed to have been a part of their educational journey. Thank you for all of the gifts and kind words. Your thoughtfulness and generosity is overwhelming. Looking ahead please check the resource tab for suggested summer work. Have a wonderful summer, Kristen Kemmerling In this class…… We all have different starting points. We can all learn from one another. We can all make progress. We will value our mistakes because we can learn from them. We will choose tasks that challenge us because this is how we develop our skills and understanding. We will keep trying even when we are finding a task difficult because this is how we make progress. ![]() The Language of Virtues: helps awaken the qualities of character that exists in children. By speaking the language of virtues, setting virtues-based boundaries and recognizing teachable moments, we bring out the best in our children -- and ourselves. We become mentors helping our children to become compassionate, courageous, respectful, confident and purposeful. The greatest gift we can give our children is the authentic self-esteem that comes from developing their virtues -- becoming contributors rather than consumers. The world needs people willing to take personal responsibility. Let it be this generation.
