The books children are expected to master are no longer simple primers but fact-filled text. Comprehension skills will include citing evidence and identifying key ideas and details. Children who haven’t made the leap to fast, fluent reading begin at this moment to fall behind, and for most of them the gap will continue to grow. Reading at home nightly is an important habit to form. Please encourage your child to read 30 minutes every night.
The expectation in 3rd grade is that students answer questions in complete sentences across the curriculum. This will help them become stronger writers and better communicators. You can reinforce this at home by reviewing homework and assignments with your child to make sure that their answers are in a complete sentence that does not start with and or because. Example: What is your favorite food? My favorite food is peanut butter. Please practice multiplication facts from 0-11 with your child. You can do this with flashcards, simple card games, apps, or games. Feel free to mix it up and make it fun. Dear 3rd Grade Parents-
This time of year allows us time to reflect on where we have been and set goals to move forward. In looking ahead our goals for the second half of the school year are to continue to fashion responsible Christian leaders, effective communicators, independent thinkers and lifelong learners that are fully prepared for 4th grade. As a 3rd grade team our focus will be on higher expectations and individual responsibility for learning. We feel that by focusing on these goals our students will be successful today and in the future. One of the ways that I plan to achieve these goals is by holding students accountable for turning work in completed and on time. During the second semester it is the third grade policy to deduct ½ point for a missing number, ½ point for a missing name and 10% will be deducted from assignments turned in late. This includes work completed on the iPad. I will continue to run missing assignment reports on Tuesdays. Any missing work not completed and turned in by the following Monday will receive a zero. Work completed in class and homework are posted daily on my website. In order for students to be successful in 4th grade and in the future they will need to take on the responsibility of completing and turning in work on time. Virtual learning has been going well since implementing both the at school and virtual piece of learning for this school year. However, I did want to call to mind a few items. Cameras need to be turned on when not working in Notes Plus or another app since it is the only way that I know they are present with me in class. Unfortunately, if students continue to have cameras off and not participate, I will have to mark them as absent. I know that learning and teaching virtually are new to all of us, but I ask for your help in emphasizing the importance of participating through having their cameras on and through answering and asking questions if your child will be learning at home for this second part of our school year. I know that technological issues may arise and I will always take those into consideration. Students learning virtually are responsible for the following:
Two novel studies will be introduced. Students will be reading aloud, working on listening skills, working on complementary writing activities, learning new vocabulary, and much more. We will be reading Who Was Dr Seuss?, by Janet B. Pascal in February and Because of Winn Dixie, by Kate DiCamillo in May. Please make sure that your child has a physical copy of each of these books. Specials schedules and dismissal times have changed. 3-5th grade dismissal is at 2:45 p.m Monday thru Thursday and 12:25 on Friday. Please see my website for an updated daily schedule. I am looking forward to a successful second semester. Thank you for being an integral part of your child’s education. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. A couple of reminders: -Charge iPads nightly -Homework is listed on my website and due the following day unless noted. -Check Renweb often -Missing assignment reports go home on Tuesdays. Assignments will be accepted up until the following Monday for partial credit. -Online students must be logged in and actively participating and responding during class. -IPads are for educational purposes. Students should not be on games or taking pictures with their iPad unless it was assigned by a teacher. -Students should not be emailing each other or messaging each other unless required to do so by a teacher. -Classroom doors will open at 7:30 a.m. -We are a nut free campus. Please do not send food items with nuts in for snack or lunch. -Please make sure that your child's mask fits snuggly, covering both their mouth and nose with no gaps between their face and the mask. Here is a link on how to adjust masks-the third method works the best: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFArU_NeYrw Dismissal is at 2:45 p.m. M-TH and at 12:25p.m. on Fridays. Students not picked up 15 minutes after dismissal time will be sent to the office. -If you are planning on keeping your child home and having them join us virtually on a specific day, please make sure that they take home all of their books the night before so they can fully participate in class and complete assignments. Anyone logged in virtually will be expected to turn in assignments on time. Here are some language frames that we will be using in the classroom, which can be reinforced at home.
Please help me to encourage your child to have a growth mindset. We can do that by encouraging them to take chances and try things that are new or they are not good at. We can encourage them to accept challenges, to make mistakes, and to learn from those mistakes. Most importantly I want them to keep trying. When it gets tough I promise to support and help them along the way. Kristen Kemmerling Communion of Saints |

The Language of Virtues: helps awaken the qualities of character that exists in children. By speaking the language of virtues, setting virtues-based boundaries and recognizing teachable moments, we bring out the best in our children -- and ourselves. We become mentors helping our children to become compassionate, courageous, respectful, confident and purposeful. The greatest gift we can give our children is the authentic self-esteem that comes from developing their virtues -- becoming contributors rather than consumers. The world needs people willing to take personal responsibility. Let it be this generation.
