(This challenge is optional) The Challenge: Read for 30 minutes every day for the rest of the school year! Rewards: For every three books you read you will receive a prize. Steps:
Rules: All books must be chapter books, no graphic novels or comic books. You must complete a different graphic organizer for each book. The graphic organizer must be completely filled out in complete sentences where appropriate. Novel studies read in class do not count. Prizes: 3 Books=Treasure Box 6 Books= IOU-Extra time on homework or Extra Recess 12 Books= Lunch with the teacher This is the year that students move from learning to read — decoding words using their knowledge of the alphabet — to reading to learn. The books children are expected to master are no longer simple primers but fact-filled text. Comprehension skills will include citing evidence and identifying key ideas and details. Children who haven’t made the leap to fast, fluent reading begin at this moment to fall behind, and for most of them the gap will continue to grow. Reading at home nightly is an important habit to form. Please encourage your child to read 30 minutes every night.
The expectation in 3rd grade is that students answer questions in complete sentences across the curriculum. This will help them become stronger writers and better communicators. You can reinforce this at home by reviewing homework and assignments with your child to make sure that their answers are in a complete sentence that does not start with and or because. Example: What is your favorite food? My favorite food is peanut butter. Please practice multiplication facts from 0-11 with your child. You can do this with flashcards, simple card games, apps, or games. Feel free to mix it up and make it fun. Next week we continue ITBS testing. Please make sure that you child gets plenty of sleep, eats a good breakfast, has a healthy snack and is on time for school. We will be starting testing first thing in the morning. The title of our OLWEUS meeting this week was Stepping Up and Stepping In. We identified different roles bystanders play in bullying situations, different options bystanders have to act before, during, or after a bullying incident. We discussed positive and negative ways that peer pressure can affect how and whether a bystander takes action. Uniforms: Please check your child's uniform. Shoes must be school colors, no orange or red accents. Rings and bracelets are not permitted. All spirit wear must be purchased from the Grotto and be a school shirt. Have a wonderful weekend, The Third Grade Team Dear 3rd grade families, If your student has made or is making their 1st Holy Communion and Confirmation this year, please forward a copy of their completed sacraments' certificate to me here in the school office. You are welcome to drop off or email me a copy. For those that have already given me a copy, THANK YOU! As a reminder, the Catholic Diocese of Phoenix requires that our school has copies of your student's Catholic Sacrament Certificates in their school cumulative files. Please let me know if you have any questions. Kindly, Leticia Albright Director of Admissions & Assistant to the Principal Saint John XXIII Catholic School As a 3rd grade team our focus will be on higher expectations and individual responsibility for learning. We feel that by focusing on these goals our students will be successful today and in the future. One of the ways that we plan to achieve these goals is by continuing to hold students accountable for turning work in complete and on time. It is the third grade policy to deduct ½ point for a missing number and ½ point for a missing name. Ten percent will be deducted from any assignment turned in late. In order for students to be successful in 4th grade and in the future they will need to turn in their work on time and completed to the best of their ability. We will continue to run a missing assignment report on Tuesdays and send it home. Any missing work not completed and turned in by the following Monday will receive a zero. Students will be responsible for finding missing assignments by following these steps in order:
Based on feedback during conferences we will be introducing a reading incentive program. Participation is optional. Look for more information coming home soon. Two novel studies will be introduced. Students will be reading aloud, working on listening skills, working on complementary writing activities, learning new vocabulary, and much more. We will be reading Who Was Dr Seuss?, by Janet B. Pascal in February and Because of Winn Dixie, by Kate DiCamillo in May. Please make sure that your child has a physical copy of each of these books. If you did not drop off your classroom cleaning supplies at the beginning of the year please send them in. We are starting to run low; especially on tissues. We are looking forward to a successful second semester. Thank you for being an integral part of your child’s education. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us. Jill Black and Kristen Kemmerling Uniform Policy-Please review the uniform policy. We are having trouble with jewelry, socks, nail polish, and belts. School jackets may be worn in the classroom and at mass. Non school jackets need to be removed in the classroom and at mass. Missing Assignments-Missing assignment reports are sent home on Tuesdays. Assignments on the missing assignment report can be turned in for partial credit up until the following Monday morning. On Monday morning any assignments on the missing assignment report that are still missing will become zeroes and students will no longer be able to complete them for credit. The exception to this rule is science and social studies assignments. Students have until the end of the quarter to turn those in. iPad usage-All students signed an iPad usage agreement. Rules have been discussed in the classroom and multiple warnings have been issued. Emailing other students, getting onto apps without permission, or use of the camera without permission are all subject to an incident report. Weekly Assignments/Tests-We do our best to complete classwork and tests on the days posted on the website. As we discussed on curriculum night, due to our specials schedules we may be off a day or two, especially in language arts and religion. Exit ticket are given at the digression of the teacher and are not posted on the classroom page. Birthday Celebrations-Birthdays are celebrated with a song and special chair for the day. A non food item may be brought in to share. Invitations and thank you notes may not be passed out in class unless you are inviting the entire class or all girls or boys. Reminders: Please pack a healthy snacks for your child. Review the uniform policy If your child is going home with someone else, you need to let us know and they need to be listed in the pickup section in Renweb. We can not release your child to anyone who is not on the approved list. Food items cannot be given out for birthdays. Have a wonderful weekend, Kristen Kemmerling & Jill Black In this class…… We all have different starting points. We can all learn from one another. We can all make progress. We will value our mistakes because we can learn from them. We will choose tasks that challenge us because this is how we develop our skills and understanding. We will keep trying even when we are finding a task difficult because this is how we make progress. The Language of Virtues: helps awaken the qualities of character that exists in children. By speaking the language of virtues, setting virtues-based boundaries and recognizing teachable moments, we bring out the best in our children -- and ourselves. We become mentors helping our children to become compassionate, courageous, respectful, confident and purposeful. The greatest gift we can give our children is the authentic self-esteem that comes from developing their virtues -- becoming contributors rather than consumers. The world needs people willing to take personal responsibility. Let it be this generation.
